Here's the summary of our recommended trip (leaving on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday):

  • 10am - 11am - Willie Smith's Apple Shed Tasting
  • 11am - 12pm - Tasting at Kate Hill Wines
  • 12pm - 1.30pm - Lunch at one of our many favourites:

    The Lost Captain, Harvest and Light, Red Velvet Lounge, The Old Bank, The Kiln and Home Hill Winery & Restaurant

  • 1.30pm - 2.00pm - Scenic Drive to Mewstone Winery (via Cradoc)
  • 2pm - 3.15pm - Tasting at Mewstone Winery
  • 3.15pm - 4pm - Tasting at Hartshorn Distillery & Grandvewe Cheese
  • 4pm - 5pm - Peppermint Bay Hotel if you're still Hungry or Walk around Five Bob Farm
  • 5pm - 6pm or later - Head back to Hobart

Bookings are essential for many wineries, especially on weekends and during peak season. This trip plan is for a one day drive itinerary either on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday noting the opening times for the best wineries and other stops to visit.

Drive Hobart to Huon Valley

Willie Smith's Apple Shed Tasting

The cidery is located at their orchard, meaning the fruit travels the smallest distance possible from tree to bottle. One of the major benefits of this is we can see the trees blossom, the fruit grow, watch it get picked and make its way into the juice press

Kate Hill Wines (Huon Valley)

Next stop will be at the award winning Kate Hill wines for a tasting of her estate and Tasmanian sourced Pinot Noir & Chardonnay.

Home Hill Winery & Restaurant (Huon Valley)

After your tasting at Kate Hill - you'll be ready for lunch at the famous Home Hill Winery Restaurant, just around the corner. Featuring stunning architecture and a delicious menu - it's time to stop and savour the local flavours of Huon Valley before making the next part of your trip. Make sure you book in advance.

If you’re happy to travel a little further it opens up many other great options in The Kiln, The Lost Captain, Red Velvet Lounge and the Old Bank.

1.30pm - 2pm

Scenic Drive to Mewstone Winery (via Cradoc)

A scenic drive through the farmland around Cradoc and over the hill finds you on the coast at Woodbridge before the quick drive along the water to Mewstone

2pm - 3.15pm

Mewstone Winery Tasting

Guided tastings, featuring 8 wines that change with the seasons, are available for $25 per person. Tastings are seated and hosted by a knowledgeable member of the team. Visitors can also enjoy locally sourced seasonal platters, and purchase wines for take-home or delivery.

Tasting at Hartsthorn Distillery & Grandvewe Cheese

Grandvewe Cheeses is a family-owned dairy that produces a range of high-quality sheep cheeses from their own herd. Visitors can taste the cheeses, witness the cheesemaking process, and explore the innovative spirit production at this sustainable and creative farm.

4pm - 5pm

Peppermint Bay Hotel if you're still Hungry or Walk around Five Bob Farm

Located at Birchs Bay just a short drive from Mewstone. The farm offers year-round walks through its scenic grounds, including a productive Kitchen Garden.
